This very question was presented to me decades ago at the Danskin Triathlon in Austin, Texas. I was still reeling from a divorce and single with three kids at home, and it was difficult to see a way out. I decided to get out of my comfort zone and do something that nobody saw coming.
I had an old mountain bike, and I loved to swim. So, with that, I signed up for the triathlon and trained for weeks. I was training in Utah, so I didn't think that the "hill country" of Austin would be a problem. Boy, was I wrong! I didn't account for the humidity, and it nearly killed me. But after a long, grueling day, I finished. I wasn't first in my age bracket, and I wasn't dead last either, just somewhere in the middle.
Somewhere along the way, God sent me an angel as I was cussing Him out for the hills of Texas. Who would have thought? Just when I didn't think I could go any further and the finish line seemed so far away, this gal ran up next to me and took my hand. A total stranger. She wanted to run alongside me. In fact, she didn't let go of my hand until I was ready to cross the finish line. I crossed the line, got my time, the medics came and gave me ice, I hugged her, and she was gone.
I never saw her again. I remember her name, her face, her kindness. I tell this story because what if I hadn't tried? What if I quit? What if I didn't cross that finish line? Who would I be? That girl who quit? Or worse, the one who didn't try at all? We sometimes get stuck in a state of woe is me, or dare I say it, the victim? And none of us wants to be in that state. I tell this story because I know that there is something wonderful waiting for you on the other side of your fear.

Ask yourself where you want to be in five months or five years, and if you can't see a vision of your future self, you're already there. Nobody sits on their deathbed wishing for more work. They wish for a life that gives them freedom to retire early and explore the world, and spend more time with their children and family. I encourage you to take the chance and do something today that your future self will thank you for. This could just be the ticket that moves the needle towards having more freedom in your life!
I'm so grateful to my younger self that I took that wild chance to run that triathlon. I can't imagine who I would be now if I hadn't done it. That question, "when was the last time you did something for the first time," is one that I will always be grateful for and one that I will continually ask of myself.
